The House of Israel in Ghana

The Israel Community House of Sefwi Wiawso and Sefwi Sui in Western Ghana is relatively new, or ancient, according to the evaluation that one has of the history of this community.
Community members believe that their ancestors, the people of Sefwi, are the descendants of Jews who migrated south through Ivory Coast (perhaps at the origin of Timbuktu), bringing with them Jewish observances antique.
The present community was born in recent years after a local spiritual leader had “a vision” that convinced him that the Sefwi ancestors were actually Jews. The House of Israel has faced many challenges because of their beliefs, but since the founding of the community about 25 years ago the elders now include several large families. Most of the members of this community are children and they are the first generation of Ghanaians (at least in our time) to be raised as Jews.
