-Guershon Nduwa: “The Jews of Cabo-Verde and Senegambia”

Sephardic Judaism after the expulsion from Spain in 1492.
The second half of the 15th century saw the arrival of Jews in West Africa
This is the story of the expelled Sephardic Jewish merchants who settled in
two communities on the Little Coast of Senegal and Cabo-Verde, an archipelago of ten islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean about 483 km from the coast of Senegal. There they lived as Jews in full view of everyone, under the spiritual direction of a rabbi sent by the newly established Portuguese Jewish community in Amsterdam and were protected from the agents of the Inquisition by Muslim leaders.
The communities of the Little Coast included several Jews of mixed Portuguese and African origin as well as African wives, children and servants.
Researchers discover these previously unknown Jewish communities and thus offer a reinterpretation of the dynamics and processes of identity building in the Atlantic world.

Our presentation will be limited to the statement aimed at clarifying the aspects of this presence which seem essential to us.
