The parasha presents a set of complex laws relating to social and family life:
The rights of the firstborn, the reparations due to all forms of violence, the illicit enrichment, conversions, divorce, levirate, damages and interest, and the recall of Amalek’s hatred.
-“He will write to her a wording of divorce”
In Judaism, marriage is a commandment. This is the first that D. had to give to the man.
“When a man has a wife and lives with her, if she ceases to please him, he will write to her
divorce and will hand him over to him “
And also “Do not harm the poor and the needy, whether it be
one of your brothers or one of the strangers who are in your country, in one of your cities.
The same day, you will give him his salary, before the sun goes down
for he is poor, and he awaits his wages with anxiety.
Fear that he will not implore you against the Lord, and that you will not be found guilty. “
(Deuteronomy 24, 14-15)
Already three thousand five hundred years ago, the Torah ordered us to be
attentive to pay without delay the wages of our workmen.
The text here translated as “He waits his salary with anxiety” takes a
added meaning in Talmud wise men who translate “wages for
which puts his life in danger.
He who works for others gives him what he has most precious:
his time, first; then his energy and often even a little bit of his
health. There are indeed no risk-free trades and even trades
modern times where human beings are riveted to their screens cause
damage more or less long term.
Failure to pay the employee’s wages in a timely manner is not
only to cause him financial harm. It’s very literally damaging
to his life. A man, the work of a man has been exploited. There’s no
necessarily abuse in the concept of exploitation, but in any case, it has
been used for profit.
Do not pay him his due on time is a crime, because it involves treating him as if he were not to be human in its own right, as if the interest of the boss was the only value
worthy of consideration.
