The black continent has always been considered out of the expanding field of Judaism, with the exception of Ethiopia. Yet black Jews live in Africa. Who are they ? To answer we will go to South Africa with the Lembas, Nigeria with the Ibos, Uganda with the Abayudayas, we will cross Mali to arrive in Senegal and the Capo Verde Islands.
After this trip, we will ask ourselves whether there are any particular themes in this black Judaized world. We will distinguish three:
a biblical theme; a historical theme that will lead us to search for Jewish traces in Africa;
a contemporary theme that will make us touch social, cultural and political issues. Maurice Dorès
